The structural and functional maturation of the prefrontal cortex is characterized by myelination and synaptic pruning, which persists into young adulthood (Sowell et al., 1999; Casey et al., 2005). During this process, gray matter loss is regarded as a key part of brain maturation (Sowell et al., 2004; Soylu et al., 2019).
