Suicidal ideation and behavior have been suggested to be related to the preoccupied attachment style (Wright et al., 2005), anxious attachment style (Stepp et al., 2008) and fearful and preoccupied attachment styles (Lessard and Moretti, 1998). There is a strong association between death ideation and social maladjustment, and death ideation may be specific to certain domains of adjustment for anxious and avoidant attachment styles (Smith et al., 2012).

2018, Psychiatry ResearchCitation Excerpt :Social disconnectedness which is characteristic of fearful avoidant individuals is also a construct related to belongingness and has been shown to be associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviours (You et al., 2011). Conversely, preoccupied attachment is characterized by positive models of others, (Lessard and Moretti, 1998). This may help engender positive interpersonal relations, and buffer the effects of loneliness or isolation, and further progression along the pathway to suicidal enactment.
