2023, Learning and InstructionCitation Excerpt :Compared to a task in direct training, the MST_far was characterized not only by low structural similarity but also by a different surface structure (e.g., Atkinsons et al., 2000) in terms of domain, subject, and context. This degree of both surface and structural dissimilarity may have hampered students’ retrieval of strategies and the building of analogies according to structure-mapping theory (Gentner et al., 1993). It might be possible to increase the similarity of tasks while maintaining a substantial transfer distance by introducing a far transfer task representing the same subject.
