14. Late effecten na behandeling van kanker

Samenvatting

Verbeteringen in diagnostiek en behandeling hebben ertoe geleid dat het genezingspercentage van zowel kinderen als volwassenen met kanker is toegenomen. Late effecten van behandeling van kanker variëren van mild tot zeer ernstig, zijn vaak niet reversibel en kunnen leiden tot een verhoogde mortaliteit. De schade aan de organen kan zich uiten in klinische symptomen, maar ook als subklinische of asymptomatische afwijkingen. Het vroeg opsporen en tijdig behandelen van deze subklinische afwijkingen kan belangrijk zijn om verdere verergering te voorkomen of te vertragen. In dit hoofdstuk worden zowel belangrijke late effecten van behandelingen van kanker bij volwassenen als van kanker op de kinderleeftijd besproken. Daarnaast wordt aandacht besteed aan de ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de organisatie van zorg voor overlevenden van kanker.
