Samenvatting

Langdurige bewustzijnsstoornissen zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met medische vooruitgang, en patiënten en families die erdoor worden getroffen verdienen speciale zorg en aandacht. Neurologisch onderzoek is belangrijk om de diagnose te stellen en met behulp van aanvullend diagnostisch onderzoek is het mogelijk meer informatie te verkrijgen over de bewustzijnstoestand van een patiënt zoals een minimally conscious state en niet-responsief waaksyndroom. Ondanks de beperkte prognostische zekerheid is het op basis van de juiste diagnose, de gereconstrueerde wens van de patiënt en nauwe interdisciplinaire samenwerking voor deze kwetsbare doelgroep steeds beter mogelijk passende zorg te bieden. Behandeling moet naast het voorkómen van complicaties ook gericht zijn op het bevorderen van reactiviteit van de patiënt. Er zijn nieuwe inzichten wat betreft behandeling zoals vroege intensieve neurorevalidatie. Er spelen diverse ethische en maatschappelijke thema’s rond langdurige bewustzijnsstoornissen.
