Kunnen kinderen groeien door trauma?

Er is het afgelopen decennium in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg evenals in de jeugdzorg veel te doen om trauma. De kennis over traumatische ervaringen bij kinderen (zoals verlies, scheiding, interpersoonlijk geweld, oorlog, ziekte, enz.) en hun impact op de ontwikkeling is exponentieel toegenomen. Bevindingen uit neurowetenschappelijk onderzoek illustreren hoe groot de schade kan zijn die kinderen door trauma kunnen oplopen en hoe diep trauma kan inslijpen in hun brein en lichaam. Ook op het vlak van diagnostiek en behandeling werden grote vorderingen gemaakt. Symptomen uit het traumasprectrum kunnen nu beter en sneller worden onderkend en benoemd, al blijft het diffuse karakter ervan diagnostici soms verwarren (Szymanski, Sapanski, & Conway, 2011). Wat behandeling betreft, deze is allang niet meer beperkt tot de (spel)kamer van de therapeut. Kinderen herstellen vooral van trauma in relaties met betekenisvolle anderen die hen veiligheid, vertrouwen en hoop bieden, begrip voor hun verhaal hebben, positieve interesse tonen, op een juiste manier affectie geven en controle laten over hun leven (Forest Talley & Knight, 2005). Wat ze nodig hebben, is een ‘trauma-informed’ omgeving. Daarom is het van belang om naast professionals ook ouders, leerkrachten, peers en andere figuren uit de dagelijkse omgeving in te schakelen als ‘behandelaars’ (Steele & Malchiodi, 2011). …
