Abstract

Het is niet goed mogelijk een onderscheid te maken tussen atherosclerose en atherotrombose, omdat het ziekteproces van atherosclerose gepaard gaat met subklinische trombose, ook als dat geen aanleiding geeft tot klinische trombotische complicaties. Naast een continu langzaam proces van inflammatie en accumulatie van lipidenrijk materiaal speelt er bij het ontstaan van vernauwingen tevens een component van herhaalde erosies en rupturen van de plaque en de vaatwand, die lokale trombose initieert. Het genezingsproces van deze subklinische incidenten leidt tot de ingroei van leukocyten en gladde spiercellen, en deze vorming van nieuw weefsel leidt tot verdere verdikking van de vaatwand en vernauwing van het lumen.
