Klinisch neurologische toepasbaarheid van multikanaals-eeg

Samenvatting

Technieken als CT en MRI, hebben het mogelijk gemaakt om driedimensionale afbeeldingen te maken van hersenstructuren. Sommige anatomische afwijkingen kunnen op deze manier worden opgespoord. Daarnaast is het mogelijk om met behulp van functionele MRI en PET processen in het brein in beeld te brengen met een ruimtelijke resolutie in de orde van millimeters. Deze beide technieken meten echter slechts indirect de hersenactiviteit. Ze maken namelijk gebruik van celmetabolisme of veranderingen in bloedtoevoer in de hersenen om een beeld te maken. EEG daarentegen is een meer directe maat voor de hersenactiviteit. Het meet namelijk de elektrische activiteit, die een gevolg is van neuronale activiteit.
Een ander voordeel van EEG is de hoge tijdsresolutie in de orde van milliseconden. De eerdergenoemde technieken hebben slechts een tijdsresolutie van seconden of zelfs minuten. Hierdoor kan een EEG snelle veranderingen in hersenactiviteit veel beter kwantificeren. Ondanks de voordelen van het EEG is deze techniek met de komst van de neuroimaging-technieken in de neurologische kliniek meer op de achtergrond geraakt. Dit komt voornamelijk door de lage ruimtelijke resolutie van EEG (in de orde van centimeters).
