Kinderen van depressieve moeders

Het integratieve model van Goodman en Gotlib

Samenvatting

Goodman en Gotlib (1999) ontwierpen een integratief model waarin ze de mechanismen beschrijven die de overdracht van depressie van moeders op hun kinderen verklaren. Ook worden modererende variabelen beschreven in de relatie tussen de depressie van de moeder en het functioneren van haar kind. Het model tracht veronderstellingen en empirische onderzoeken bij elkaar te brengen. In het artikel bespreken we dit model kritisch en schenken daarbij vooral aandacht aan wat klinisch relevant is.

In dit artikel richten we ons uitsluitend op moeders met een unipolaire depressieve stoornis. We doen dus geen uitspraken over depressieve moeders met psychotische stoornissen, bipolaire stoornissen, posttraumatische stressstoornis, ernstige somatische pathologie of acuut suïcidegevaar. We kunnen onderscheid maken tussen depressie die reeds vóór de geboorte van het kind bij de moeder aanwezig was en de postpartumdepressie. Wanneer we het hier hebben over depressie bedoelen we postpartumdepressie, omdat de literatuur over de depressieve moeder-kindrelatie zich vooral hierop richt.

Een ouderlijke reactie is niet- of minder contingent wanneer ze ritmisch en temporeel niet goed aansluit bij een actie van het kind.

‘Kind en gezin’ is een Vlaamse organisatie die actief is in de preventieve zorg voor gezinnen met zeer jonge kinderen en die de kwaliteit van opvang en zorgvoorzieningen voor zeer jonge kinderen bewaakt. Ze is actief in het domein ‘Welzijn, volksgezondheid en gezin’.
