Als een kind bij de dokter komt met buikpijn en bloed in de ontlasting, staat Enterobius vermicularis, beter bekend als aarsmade of oxyure, meestal niet hoog in de differentiaaldiagnose. Toch is het aan te raden deze diagnose niet uit te sluiten. Een infectie met E. vermicularis verloopt meestal onschuldig, maar kan bij invasie van de darmmucosa in zeldzame gevallen ook tot ernstiger (inflammatoire) klachten leiden, zoals rectaal bloedverlies. Onder welke omstandigheden deze veelvoorkomende darmparasiet in het slijmvlies kan doordringen, is niet helemaal duidelijk; het lijkt erop dat hij gebruik maakt van bestaande beschadigingen. De infectie is goed te behandelen; bij voorkeur wordt het hele gezin behandeld om herbesmetting te voorkomen.
