Samenvatting

Ongeveer 40 % van alle kankergevallen kan worden voorkomen door risico’s zoals roken, overgewicht, alcoholgebruik, ongezonde voeding en lichamelijke inactiviteit te vermijden. Wanneer eenmaal kanker is ontstaan, spelen voeding en beweging een belangrijke ondersteunende rol. Het handhaven of bereiken van een goede voedingstoestand is uitermate belangrijk om de behandelingen te kunnen doorstaan, schade door de behandelingen te beperken, en het herstel zo goed mogelijk te ondersteunen. Gezond eten en meer bewegen lijken ook het risico op recidieven en het krijgen van andere ziekten, zoals diabetes en hart- en vaatziekten, te verkleinen en de overlevingskans te vergroten. Daarom worden de richtlijnen voor kankerpreventie ook aanbevolen voor mensen die kanker hebben gehad. Echter, (ex)kankerpatiënten blijken de richtlijnen voor een gezonde leefstijl vaak niet te volgen. Voor zorgprofessionals is daarom een belangrijke rol weggelegd in het benadrukken van het belang van voeding en beweging vooraf, tijdens en na (de behandeling van) kanker.
