In Your Life, Your Way: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Skills to Help Teens Manage Emotions and Build Resilience, authors Joseph V. Ciarrochi and Louise L. Hayes deliver a self-help program for teens struggling with the challenges of adolescence. Grounded on the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT; Hayes et al. 1999; Puolakanaho et al. 2019), the program is based on the DNA-V model. This model assumes the patient has three roles: discoverer (D), noticer (N), and advisor (A); and these roles function as a check-and-balance system. The patient’s psychosocial health depends on their ability to shift between these roles as needed. The DNA-V is an adaptation of the ACT Hexaflex model, and was designed specifically for dealing with young people (Gillard et al. 2018). …
