Human trafficking is an international concern. In Trafficked Young People: Breaking the Wall of Silence, Jenny Pearce, Patricia Hynes and Silvie Bovarnick examine what they label as one of the most serious human rights violations of our time. Their book specifically looks at the trafficking of young people into, within and out of the UK, but many of the factors, findings and conclusions discussed apply to countries around the world. They provide context to demonstrate the magnitude of the issue. UNICEF statistics provided in the book reveal 1.2 million children under the age of 18 may be trafficked worldwide each year. The authors introduce a particular interest in older adolescents who are approaching adulthood. How do they react to their situation? What can be done to help them? Why are they overlooked as victims? Often there is an emphasis placed on the effects of trafficking on younger children and infants, so older adolescents are not perceived and treated as victims in the same manner. …
