Administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is the treatment of choice for patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and is also occasionally used to treat autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA). In these diseases IgG-opsonized blood cells are cleared from the circulation. The mechanism of action of IVIg is unknown. One hypothesis is that IVIg saturates the receptors for IgG, the Fc-gamma Receptors (FcγRs), on macrophages of the reticulo-endothelial system, preventing uptake of cells mediated by these receptors. …
