Acetylsalicylzuur wordt vaak gebruikt als secundaire preventie bij patiënten met een cardiovasculaire aandoening. Het mechanisme van het cardioprotectieve effect van acetylsalicylzuur is gebaseerd op het vermogen om de plaatjesaggregatie tegen te gaan, waardoor de kans op trombose vermindert
