Is het mediterrane dieet met olijfolie goed voor de gezondheid?

Samenvatting

Tal van epidemiologische studies en biochemische onderzoeken tonen aan dat olijfolie-bevattende diëten de hoeveelheid atherogeen LDL-cholesterol in het bloed verlagen. De mediterrane keuken is rijk aan complexe koolhydraten, vezels en enkelvoudig onverzadigde vetten, waarvan olijfolie wel de belangrijkste representant is. Zowel met betrekking tot coronaire hartziekten als tot andere ziekten, zoals hypertensie, diabetes mellitus, obesitas en een aantal vormen van kanker lijkt een olijfolie-bevattend dieet gunstig. Om een directe relatie tussen olijfolie en een reductie van gezondheidsrisico’s te bewijzen, zijn echter grootschalige onderzoeken nodig. De uitvoering hiervan (dubbelblind placebo-gecontroleerd) is evenwel uiterst complex.
