Samenvatting

De prevalentie van chronische nierinsufficiëntie (CNI) neemt toe. Enerzijds is dit is het gevolg van vergrijzing en adipositas, waardoor de incidentie van nefrosclerose en diabetische nefropathie stijgt. Anderzijds wordt CNI in een vroeg stadium ontdekt door meer systematische screening bij patiënten met diabetes, hypertensie en vaatlijden. CNI gaat gepaard met progressief nierfunctieverlies met de potentiële noodzaak van dialyse en transplantatie en veel complicaties, waaronder cardiovasculaire morbiditeit en mortaliteit.
