Samenvatting

Insomnie is een van de meest voorkomende slaapstoornissen binnen de algemene bevolking en de psychiatrische populatie. Insomnie, ook wel slapeloosheid genoemd, gaat gepaard met klachten over problemen met in slaap vallen, wakker worden tijdens de slaapperiode, of te vroeg ontwaken en niet meer in slaap kunnen komen. Deze klachten leiden tot beperkingen in het dagelijks leven. Verschillende modellen en theorieën zijn ontwikkeld om het ontstaan en voortbestaan van insomnie te verklaren, vooral het concept arousal speelt hierin een belangrijke rol. Insomnie is een belangrijke risicofactor voor psychiatrische aandoeningen, maar heeft ook effecten op bijvoorbeeld het cognitief functioneren en de lichamelijke gezondheid. De aanbevolen behandeling is cognitieve gedragstherapie voor insomnie. Deze therapie verbetert niet alleen de symptomen van insomnie in ongeveer twee derde van de insomniepatiënten, maar heeft ook een positieve uitwerking op symptomen van diverse psychiatrische stoornissen.
