Samenvatting

Veroudering van de wereldbevolking is een van de grootste menselijke verwezenlijkingen van de laatste eeuwen, maar tegelijkertijd een grote zorg. De demografische transitie die we nu en in de komende decennia ondergaan is gigantisch, maar gaat jammer genoeg gepaard met een tweede transitie, de epidemiologische overgang naar niet-overdraagbare chronische aandoeningen. Hierin gaat nog een derde transitie schuil, de klinische overgang met de presentatie van meerdere aandoeningen in één persoon en andere manifestaties van aandoeningen op latere leeftijd. In dit inleidend hoofdstuk laten we diverse feiten en reflecties over deze ontwikkeling de revue passeren.
