Samenvatting

Inhalatieanesthetica zijn de oudste synthetische farmaca die we nog steeds toepassen in de geneeskunde. Ether werd in 1600 door Paracelsus gesynthetiseerd uit zwavelzuur en alcohol. Hoewel hij het anesthetische effect ervan al bij kippen beschreef, heeft het officieel tot 1846 geduurd tot de toepassing door Morton bij de mens in het openbaar plaatsvond. Daarvoor, in 1832, was het overigens al gebruikt door Crawford Long, maar hij heeft dit nooit beschreven en er dan ook niet de eer voor gekregen. Toch wordt in de Verenigde Staten, als pleister op de wonde, ieder jaar ter ere van hem op 31 maart Doctor’s Day gevierd.
