Samenvatting

Darminfecties worden veroorzaakt door bacteriën, virussen of parasieten. Diarree, misselijkheid met of zonder braken en buikpijn zijn de meest voorkomende klachten. Afhankelijk van de verwekker kunnen ook (hoge) koorts, pijnlijke buikkrampen en bloed en slijm in de feces aanwezig zijn. Ook een aantal systemische infectieziekten kan gepaard gaan met diarree, bijvoorbeeld legionellose, listeriose, mazelen, influenza, toxischeshocksyndroom en virale hepatitis A. Daarnaast kunnen diarree en braken worden veroorzaakt door microbiële toxinen die gevormd zijn in voedsel voorafgaand aan consumptie. In dat geval spreken we van voedselvergiftiging. Diarreeklachten kunnen ook voortkomen uit niet-infectieuze darmziekten, bijvoorbeeld colitis ulcerosa of de ziekte van Crohn.
