Een indicator is een meetbaar aspect van en heeft een signalerende functie voor de kwaliteit van geleverde zorg.
Richtlijnen zijn geschikt als basis voor zorginhoudelijke kwaliteitsindicatoren.
Voor het ontwikkelen van indicatoren op basis van richtlijnen wordt aanbevolen om te werken volgens een systematische methode.
Eenduidige interpretatie van indicatorscores vergt een registratiegids met afspraken over registratie en exacte formuleringen van de indicatoren, en uiteraard de naleving daarvan.
Indicatoren worden steeds meer gebruikt, maar soms passen indicatoren niet bij de doelstelling of de context.
