Ik zorg, dus ik ben

Oudste dochters, parentificatie en psychische problemen op oudere leeftijd

Samenvatting

In dit artikel beschrijf ik twee cliënten in behandeling bij de afdeling specialistische ambulante ouderenpsychiatrie van GGZ-Altrecht te Utrecht. Het betreft oudste dochters (82 en 68 jaar) die mij zijn opgevallen door de vergelijkbare manier waarop zij in het leven staan. Zij hebben een zorgattitude ontwikkeld die deel van hun persoonlijkheid lijkt te zijn geworden: het zorgen voor anderen heeft prioriteit boven de zorg voor zichzelf. Ik suggereer dat parentificatie in de jeugd een verklaring kan zijn voor de vasthoudendheid waarmee deze cliënten willen blijven zorgen voor anderen. Mijn veronderstelling is dat pas wanneer zij hiertoe niet meer in staat zijn of anderen hun zorg niet meer nodig hebben, zij in psychische problemen komen. Ik illustreer deze aanname met de twee casussen en doe voorstellen voor behandeling.
