Samenvatting

In de adolescentie moeten jongeren ontdekken wie ze zijn, ze moeten hun identiteit vinden. De belangrijkste adolescente-identiteitstheorie gaat ervan uit dat mensen een identiteit hebben als ze weten wat ze willen in het leven en als ze duidelijke keuzen hebben gemaakt voor de toekomst. In de theorie heten keuzen commitments. Identiteitsonderzoek spreekt van een goed ontwikkelde identiteit als jongeren sterke commitments hebben, als ze die goed overwogen hebben gekozen en geen twijfels hebben over hun keuze. Het oorspronkelijke identiteitsmodel is bedacht door de Amerikaan Marcia en later aangevuld door Europese onderzoekers. Die leggen niet alleen de nadruk op de vorming van identiteit, maar ook op de manier waarop adolescenten hun identiteit in stand houden. Daarom spreken ze van twee cycli in de ontwikkeling van identiteit. Onderzoek laat zien dat identiteit zich in de loop van de adolescentie ontwikkelt van een vage of onzekere identiteit naar een duidelijke en zekere identiteit. Dat wordt gevonden in onderzoek op groepsniveau en individueel niveau. Twee-cycli-modellen kunnen het concrete verloop van de ontwikkeling van identiteit beter laten zien dat het oorspronkelijke model van Marcia.
