4. Iemand worden: ontwikkeling van de persoonlijkheid

Samenvatting

In de adolescentie vormen jongeren niet alleen hun identiteit, maar ook hun persoonlijkheid. Er zijn twee manieren om persoonlijkheid te bestuderen. We kunnen kijken naar aparte persoonlijkheidstrekken. Dan stellen we de vraag of adolescenten extravert, aardig, consciëntieus, emotioneel stabiel en open zijn. We kunnen ook kijken naar de combinatie van persoonlijkheidstrekken van individuen. Die combinaties noemen we persoonlijkheidstypen. Er zijn drie persoonlijkheidstypen: veerkrachtigen, overcontrollers en undercontrollers. Veerkrachtigen zijn flexibel en weten goed wanneer ze actief moeten zijn en wanneer ze zichzelf in moeten houden, overcontrollers houden zichzelf te vaak in, en undercontrollers zijn te impulsief. Adolescenten laten een duidelijke ontwikkeling van hun persoonlijkheid zien: ze worden extraverter, consciëntieuzer, emotioneel stabieler en meer open. Ook neemt het aantal veerkrachtigen in de loop van de adolescentie toe en het aantal over- en undercontrollers af. Individuele verschillen in de persoonlijkheid worden stabieler en de organisatie van de persoonlijkheid neemt toe. Veerkrachtigen laten de gunstigste ontwikkeling zien, en over- en undercontrollers hebben duidelijke maar verschillende risicoprofielen.
