Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk worden etiologie, diagnostiek en behandeling van problemen met hyperseksualiteit besproken. Dergelijke problemen kunnen optreden als men dermate intensief met seks bezig is, in fantasie of gedrag, dat dit leidt tot negatieve consequenties, zonder dat men in staat is te stoppen. Emotiedisregulatie is een belangrijke onderliggende factor van de problemen met hyperseksualiteit. Om aan negatieve gevoelens, zoals lage eigenwaarde en schaamte, te ontsnappen, wordt in seks een uitweg gezocht, waarbij echter een averechts effect kan optreden, omdat na seks juist diezelfde negatieve gevoelens opnieuw getriggerd worden. Als het gebruik van seks om negatieve gevoelens te ontvluchten een belangrijke reden wordt om seks te hebben, dan kan dit tot een vast patroon leiden dat moeilijk te doorbreken is. Afhankelijk van de zwaarte van de ervaren problemen helpen interventies als psycho-educatie, cognitieve gedragstherapie of groepstherapie.
