Samenvatting

Ouder worden gaat gepaard met ingrijpende afname in spierkracht en spiermassa, sarcopenie genoemd. Dit proces wordt sterk beïnvloed door inflammatoire processen. Episodes van acute inflammatie bijvoorbeeld ten gevolge van infectie kunnen de spieratrofie dramatisch versnellen en zijn daarom bedreigend voor de zelfredzaamheid van oudere mensen. Door middel van intensieve krachttraining is het mogelijk spierzwakte ten gevolge van sarcopenie te recupereren, zelfs op hoge leeftijd en bij fragiele patiënten. Er is toenemende evidentie dat deze toename in spierkracht bijdraagt aan verbetering in de uitvoering van dagelijkse activiteiten die submaximale inspanningen vergen, zoals opkomen uit een stoel en wandelen. Bovendien zijn er aanwijzingen dat getrainde ouderen beter bestand zijn tegen stresssituaties, zoals infecties, dan niet-getrainde ouderen.
