Samenvatting

Hoofdpijn is pijn gelokaliseerd in en om het hoofd. Hersenweefsel zelf is gevoelloos – er zijn namelijk geen nociceptoren –, maar de intra- (bloedvaten en hersenvliezen) en extracraniële (sinussen, oogkassen, tanden, oren, gewrichtjes, bloedvaten, spieren) structuren zijn wel pijngevoelig. Hoofdpijn kan een significante impact hebben op school (aanwezigheid en de leerkwaliteit) en vrije tijd. De fenotypen kunnen verschillen tussen volwassenen en kinderen, onder andere doordat de kindertijd en adolescentie een actieve periode van hersenontwikkeling en myelinisatie is.
