Samenvatting beleid

Hoesten komt veel voor en gaat vaak vanzelf over. Als bij anamnese en lichamelijk onderzoek geen bijzonderheden naar voren komen die kunnen wijzen op een onderliggend (chronisch) ziektebeeld of medicatiegebruik, kan in beginsel een afwachtend en geruststellend beleid gevoerd worden. Leg uit dat hoesten na een luchtweginfectie weken kan aanhouden en verwijs naar www.​thuisarts.​nl/​hoesten/​ik-heb-last-van-hoesten-volwassene voor nadere informatie over oorzaken en behandeling. Leg uit dat het effect van medicijnen, waaronder zelfzorgmiddelen, afwezig of zeer beperkt is en dat ook vrij verkrijgbare middelen zoals noscapine en acetylcysteïne bijwerkingen kunnen veroorzaken. Sommige verzachtende middelen zoals dropjes, honing en sacharose- of tijmsiroop kunnen in principe geen ernstige bijwerkingen veroorzaken, maar het effect is niet aangetoond en ze kunnen cariës veroorzaken. Schrijf geen antibiotica voor, en geef uitleg over de bijwerkingen (maag-darmklachten) en resistentievorming. Schrijf zonder diagnostiek naar astma of COPD (nog) geen inhalatiemedicijnen voor.
