Hoe ouders tijdens een screening voor autismespectrumstoornissen betekenis verlenen aan het gedrag van hun kind: een longitudinaal kwalitatief onderzoek

Samenvatting

In gezinnen met een kind met een autismespectrumstoornis (ASS) begint ‘de reis’ die ouders maken in het leren begrijpen van het gedrag van hun kind vaak tijdens de screening. Het doel van dit onderzoek was een beeld te krijgen van de interpretatieve processen die daarbij op gang komen. Daarvoor namen we longitudinale interviews af bij 19 gezinnen die bij een plaatselijke hulpverleningsinstantie een meertraps-screeningsprotocol doorliepen. De data werden geanalyseerd vanuit een aangepaste gefundeerde theoriebenadering. Ouders die het gedrag van hun kind begrepen als een uiting van ASS gaven blijk van 1) sensitisatie voor ASS-symptomen; 2) differentiatie, door het verschil tussen de ASS-symptomen en andere ontwikkelingsstoornissen te gaan zien; en 3) het feit dat ze de ASS-diagnose gebruikten als verklaring voor de verontrustende gedragingen. Identificatie van de interpretatieve processen tijdens de ASS-screening biedt nieuwe mogelijkheden voor het gezamenlijk nemen van beslissingen.
