How to reach consensus? Methods to reach consensus about recommendations
Clinical guideline development is an important first step in delivering good (quality of) care. Quality indicators are more and more used to monitor compliance of recommendations in these clinical guidelines. This paper describes two ways to reach consensus about the most relevant recommendations for delivering good quality of care. The first method (IQ consensustool) is based on individual rounds of scoring the recommendations followed by discussion meetings. The other method (Synmind) is a digital communication platform where recommendations can be scored and discussed online. These tools have been used in different research settings and based on this we concluded that both methods are valuable tools in getting consensus about the most relevant recommendations, in this particular case, for delivering good surgical care.
