Uit onderzoek blijkt dat de wens van genderdysfore jongeren tot een geslachtsaanpassende behandeling die al op jonge leeftijd bestaat, meestal niet meer verdwijnt. Het gebruik van puberteitsremmers wordt als zeer positief ervaren. Het voorkomt mogelijk problemen op latere leeftijd. De vrij grote groep jongeren zonder ernstige bijkomende problemen heeft niet veel extra zorg nodig. Samenwerking met hulpverleners in de eigen regio voor de genderdysfore jongeren met een autismespectrumstoornis, andere psychiatrische problemen of een problematische gezinsachtergrond is daarentegen noodzakelijk.
