Samenvatting

Doel Patiënten in het eindstadium van COPD ervaren een slechte kwaliteit van leven en aanzienlijke problemen in hun dagelijks leven. Desondanks vragen ze niet actief om hulp. Ze krijgen daardoor niet de hulp die ze nodig hebben. Wij wilden inzicht krijgen in de redenen waarom deze patiënten niet actief om hulp vragen.
Methode We namen bij elf patiënten zestien semigestructureerde diepte-interviews af.
Resultaten Om een hulpvraag te kunnen uiten moeten patiënten hun beperkingen als abnormaal beschouwen en zich realiseren dat er mogelijkheden zijn om hun situatie te verbeteren. De COPD-patiënten zagen zichzelf echter alleen als ziek tijdens een acute exacerbatie, en beschouwden hun dagelijks leven als normaal. Daarnaast dachten ze dat ze niet geholpen konden worden omdat hun longen te zeer beschadigd waren.
Conclusie De zorg moet zich in dit stadium niet alleen op de longfunctie concentreren, maar ook en vooral op het verbeteren van het dagelijks leven. Huisartsen moeten op een actieve manier onderzoeken aan welke praktische ondersteuning hun patiënten behoefte hebben bij het op peil houden van hun dagelijkse activiteiten. Vervolgens moeten ze hun patiënten op een actieve manier ondersteunen. Verder onderzoek kan uitwijzen of een dergelijke aanpak inderdaad tegemoetkomt aan de behoeften van deze patiënten.
