samenvatting

Eerder onderzoek naar het zelfconcept van kinderen met ‘attention deficit hyperactivity disorder’ (adhd) leverde tegenstrijdig resultaten op. Door de onderzoeksliteratuur op systematische wijze te vergelijken wat betreft de gebruikte onderzoeksmethode, de meetinstrumenten en de indeling van de klinische groepen, geven we een duidelijk beeld van het zelfconcept van kinderen met adhd. Hierbij wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen hoe kinderen met adhd zichzelf beoordelen in vergelijking met leeftijdgenoten, en hoe realistisch de zelfbeoordelingen van kinderen met adhd zijn in vergelijking met het feitelijk functioneren. Wij concluderen dat kinderen met adhd onvoldoende in staat zijn om hun gedrag kritisch te evalueren en dat zij hun vermogens overschatten. Voor het ontwikkelen van goede behandelmethoden is het van belang om de comorbiditeit en onderliggende factoren in kaart te brengen.
