Samenvatting

Gemeenschappelijke coping ontstaat als relatiepartners een stressvol gezondheidsprobleem zien als iets “van ons”, in plaats van iets “van mij” en zij er gezamenlijk mee omgaan. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat linguïstische coping (praten in de wij-vorm) en andere vormen van gemeenschappelijke coping zinvol zijn bij verschillende chronische ziekten, maar de literatuur geeft maar zelden aan hoe artsen het wij-gevoel en het teamwork actief kunnen bevorderen, zodat patiënten en hun partner ook kunnen profiteren van de gezondheidsvoordelen die dit lijkt op te leveren. In dit artikel worden de klinische en wetenschappelijke kenmerken belicht van een narratieve interventie voor het bevorderen van gemeenschappelijke coping bij koppels waarvan een partner een chronische ziekte heeft. De illustratieve ziekte is diabetes, maar met enige aanpassingen is dit protocol ook geschikt voor andere chronische aandoeningen. De gemeenschappelijke coping-interventie is gebaseerd op de systemische en narratieve modellen van het in stand houden van problemen en verandering, en deze is het resultaat van onderzoek naar- en klinische ervaring met gezinsconsultaties in de afgelopen decennia. In tegenstelling tot de meer directieve en educatieve benaderingen bestaat deze interventie volledig uit vragen, zonder directe suggesties of aanwijzingen voor hoe de patiënt, partner of relatie zou moeten veranderen. Deze vragen maken deel uit van acht opeenvolgende modules (Coping-uitdagingen, Verloop en focus, Ziekte als indringer van buitenaf, Jullie als koppel, Eerder teamwork bij het verwerken van tegenslagen, Huidig en toekomstig teamwork, Belemmeringen voor teamwork en Afronding) en deze worden in dit artikel gedetailleerd beschreven.
