Samenvatting

De psychiatrie is het medisch specialisme dat zich bezighoudt met de behandeling van psychiatrische ziekten. Deze simpele, voor de moderne westerse mens vanzelfsprekende opvatting, het zogenoemde ‘ziektemodel’, is historisch gezien van betrekkelijk recente datum (zie ook Van Tilburg 2005). De geboorte van de psychiatrie als medisch specialisme heeft plaatsgevonden in het Europa van de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw, dus in de tijd van de verlichting.
