Samenvatting

Hart- en vaatziekten zijn wereldwijd verantwoordelijk voor één op de drie overlijdens en ischemische hartziekten zijn doodsoorzaak nummer één. Een ongezonde leefstijl en risicofactoren zoals hypertensie, hypercholesterolemie en diabetes spelen een essentiële rol bij het ontstaan en de progressie van het overgrote deel van de hart- en vaatziekten. Meer dan 80 % van de hart- en vaatziekten is direct gerelateerd aan leefstijl. Daarmee vormen cardiovasculaire aandoeningen een van de belangrijkste leefstijlgerelateerde chronische ziekten. Een ongezonde leefstijl is verantwoordelijk voor het grootste verlies aan kwalitatief goede levensjaren. Gezonde leefgewoonten zijn de beste manier om de cardiovasculaire gezondheid te behouden of te bevorderen. Dit hoofdstuk bespreekt de leefstijlfactoren die van invloed zijn op het ontstaan en de progressie van hart- en vaatziekten.
