Samenvatting

Er zijn talloze studies die een verband aantonen tussen obstructieve slaapapneu en het optreden van hart- en vaatziekten. Het sterkste bewijs is aangetoond voor een relatie tussen het obstructieveslaapapneusyndroom (OSAS) en hoge bloeddruk, kransslagaderverkalking, boezemfibrillatie, cerebrovasculair accident en hartfalen. De mechanistische link tussen OSAS en hart- en vaatziekten is hoogstwaarschijnlijk gebaseerd op de intermitterende hypoxemie en reoxygenatie. De risicofactoren voor OSAS lopen voor een belangrijk deel parallel met die voor hart- en vaatziekten. De toename van het aantal patiënten met obesitas en hypertensie onderstreept de noodzaak van effectieve screening op risicofactoren en behandeling daar waar nodig. Leefstijlinterventie is een belangrijke factor in het verbeteren van de symptomen van OSAS en het risico op hart- en vaatziekten.
