Samenvatting

Handen wassen. Hoe ‘stoffig’ kan een onderwerp zijn? Triviaal misschien, maar wel zeer relevant: Handcontact door zorgverleners is een onmiskenbare manier om ziekteverwekkers te verspreiden van patiënt naar patiënt.1) Het gezondheidszorgprobleem van ziekenhuisinfecties is groot. Een ziekenhuisinfectie komt gemiddeld voor bij 6,3 procent van de opgenomen patiënten en een postoperatieve wondinfectie bij 6,1 procent van de geopereerde patiënten (cijfers: Prezies 2010 en AMC Infectiecommissie 2009). Ook de Joint Commission International (JCI), de wereldwijde organisatie die zich inzet voor de bewaking en verbetering van de zorgkwaliteit en accreditatie van ziekenhuizen, richt zich op ziekenhuisinfecties en erkent dat handhygiëne een van de belangrijkste belangrijke manieren is om deze te bestrijden.
