17. Grondbeginselen van de preoperatieve screening

Samenvatting

De complicaties die als gevolg van anesthesie kunnen optreden, worden sterk bepaald door de preoperatieve lichamelijke en geestelijke conditie van de patiënt. Het vaststellen en waar mogelijk verbeteren van de conditie, het vaststellen van het anesthesie- en operatierisico en het verminderen van de perioperatieve mortaliteit en morbiditeit zijn dan ook de voornaamste doelstellingen van het preoperatieve onderzoek. Preoperatief onderzoek heeft dus zeker niet ten doel een algemene screening van de gezondheidstoestand van de bevolking te doen, maar moet gericht zijn op het specifieke individuele perioperatieve risico. Omdat de anesthesioloog degene is die moet beslissen of en welke vorm van anesthesie aan de patiënt gegeven kan worden, is hij/zij ook degene die verantwoordelijk is voor het preoperatieve onderzoek.
