10. Groei, stofwisseling en adaptatie van botweefsel

Abstract

Bot is een gespecialiseerd weefsel met als belangrijkste functie het lichaam te ondersteunen en de inwendige organen en het beenmerg te beschermen tegen mechanische krachten van buiten. Als onderdeel van het bewegingsapparaat zijn de botstukken onderling met ligamenten verbonden en via peesaanhechtingen worden ze aangestuurd door de spieren. Daarnaast heeft bot een belangrijke metabole functie, zoals het opslaan en het aanbieden van calcium en fosfaten. De anatomie van groei, stofwisseling en adaptatie van botweefsel is globaal in veel anatomische handboeken beschreven (Brighton e.a., 1994; Eriksen e.a., 1995). Veel zaken zijn echter nog onbekend. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn de functie van de vele eiwitten die zijn opgeslagen in het botweefsel of elementaire zaken als de functie en de werking van de cellen die een rol spelen bij de botstofwisseling (Favus, 1996). Recente onderzoeken met behulp van elektronenmicroscopie geven zelfs een ander, nieuw inzicht op het gebied van de microscopische anatomie (Marotti, 1996).
