Gezonde levensverwachting op oudere leeftijd: een vergelijking van migranten en niet-migranten in drie Europese landen over tijd

Samenvatting

In dit artikel bestuderen we ten eerste in hoeverre de gezonde levensverwachting op 50-jarige leeftijd (GLV50) verschilt tussen migranten en niet-migranten in België, Nederland en Engeland & Wales. Ten tweede bestuderen we voor de twee laatstgenoemde landen ook de verandering hierin tussen 2001 en 2011. Gegevens over bevolking, sterfte en zelf-gerapporteerde gezondheid komen uit de bevolkingsregisters, de census en gezondheidsenquêtes. De GLV50 is berekend voor niet-migranten, westerse en niet-westerse migranten naar geslacht. Decompositietechnieken zijn gebruikt om te bepalen of verschillen in GLV50 tussen de herkomstgroepen en veranderingen in GLV50 over tijd kunnen worden toegeschreven aan verschillen in sterfte of gezondheid. De resultaten laten zien dat, voor mannen en vrouwen in de drie landen, oudere – met name niet-westerse – migranten naar verwachting minder jaren in goede gezondheid leven dan oudere niet-migranten. Dit verschil kan voornamelijk worden toegeschreven aan gezondheidsverschillen. Waar in Nederland de verschillen in GLV50 tussen migranten en niet-migranten gedaald zijn over de tijd, zijn de verschillen in Engeland & Wales toegenomen. Verbeteringen in GLV50 kunnen voornamelijk toegeschreven worden aan afname in sterfte. Interventies gericht op het verkleinen van ongelijkheden in gezondheid en sterfte tussen ouderen met en zonder migratieachtergrond zouden zich moeten focussen op preventie, vooral onder niet-westerse migranten.
