Geschiedenis van de elektroconvulsietherapie

Abstract

De elektroconvulsietherapie (ect), een biologische behandelmethode, heeft een veelbewogen geschiedenis die van belang is om de positie van deze behandeling binnen de psychiatrie te begrijpen.

Voor 1930 kende de psychiatrie nauwelijks biologische behandelmethoden, maar tussen 1933 en 1938 deden de eerste somatische behandelingen hun intrede: insuline coma, metrazol convulsietherapie, psychochirurgie en elektroconvulsietherapie.
