Rook- en alcoholverslaving zijn de twee meestvoorkomende verslavingsziekten in de huisartsenpraktijk. Het doel van dit artikel is de huisarts te informeren over de belangrijkste man-vrouwverschillen en over de consequenties van deze verschillen voor de dagelijkse praktijk. Met behulp van genderspecifieke kennis van risico- en gedragsfactoren van roken en alcoholgebruik is de huisarts beter in staat om rook- en alcoholverslaving tijdig te diagnosticeren en adequate voorlichting, adviezen en begeleiding te geven, zowel aan vrouwen als aan mannen. Daarnaast kan de huisarts in samenwerking met de gemeente en de zorgverzekeraar een belangrijke rol spelen bij het ontwikkelen van een gendersensitieve aanpak van de preventie van rook- en alcoholverslaving.
