19. Genderdysforie

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk staat de beschrijving van het fenomeen genderdysforie centraal. De term genderdysforie verwijst naar het gevoel van onbehagen als gevolg van een ervaren incongruentie tussen enerzijds de genderidentiteit en anderzijds het lichamelijke geslacht. Genderidentiteitsproblemen komen voor in verschillende vormen en gradaties en kunnen betrekking hebben op hoe iemand zich identificeert op het continuüm van mannelijkheid of vrouwelijkheid. De mate waarin iemand hulp nodig heeft, en de vorm en inhoud daarvan kunnen erg verschillen. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op de terminologie en de classificatie van genderdysforie, de epidemiologische kennis over genderdysforie en de typische en atypische genderontwikkeling. Daarna wordt afzonderlijk ingegaan op het proces van diagnostiek en (medische) behandeling op de kinderleeftijd en in de adolescentie en de volwassenheid. Het hoofdstuk sluit af met een beknopt overzicht van wat er op dit moment over de effectiviteit van de behandeling bij genderdysforie bekend is.
