Functionele mri en informatieverwerkingsstoornissen bij schizofrenie

Abstract

Functionele magnetische resonantie beeldvorming (functional magnetic resonance imaging, fmri) heeft de afgelopen jaren een enorme ontwikkeling doorgemaakt. Met name in de psychiatrie is dankbaar gebruikgemaakt van deze non-invasieve methode om activiteit in de hersenen te meten. Mede als gevolg van fmri is de interesse in de cognitieve aspecten van de stoornis toegenomen. Onderzoek naar de neuronale substraten van schizofrenie richt zich vooral op het kortstondig vasthouden en coördineren van informatie in de hersenen, oftewel het werkgeheugen. De hersengebieden die betrokken zijn bij het werkgeheugen zijn inmiddels grotendeels geïdentificeerd, evenals de werkgeheugengebieden die mogelijk verantwoordelijk zijn voor de belangrijkste cognitieve stoornissen bij het ziektebeeld. Onderzoek richt zich nu meer op de netwerken waarin die gebieden ingebed zijn, om deze stoornissen beter te begrijpen. In dit artikel wordt ook ingegaan op de nieuwste ontwikkeling, namelijk het koppelen van genen aan verstoorde hersenfuncties (en niet aan het ziektebeeld zelf), als strategie om de genetische basis van schizofrenie te ontrafelen.
