fMRI-onderzoek bij de ziekte van Alzheimer

Abstract

Met mri wordt veel onderzoek gedaan naar veranderingen in de hersenen bij dementie, in het bijzonder bij de ziekte van Alzheimer. Recentelijk wordt functionele mri (fmri) ook steeds vaker ingezet om veranderingen in functies te bestuderen bij dementie. Men verwacht namelijk dat veranderingen in functies in bepaalde structuren eerder meetbaar zijn dan structurele veranderingen, wat zou betekenen dat fmri kan helpen dementie in een vroeg stadium op te sporen (vroegdiagnostiek). Daarnaast wordt fmri gebruikt om (dis)functioneren van de hersenen te bestuderen bij verschillende soorten dementie (differentiële diagnostiek), en wordt gekeken naar de effecten van medicijnen op hersenactiviteit (fmri van farmacologische interventie).
