Samenvatting

Fecale incontinentie is onvrijwillig verlies van ontlasting boven de leeftijd van 4 jaar (overdag of 's nachts). De meest voorkomende oorzaak is obstipatie. Het kan hier om kleine veegjes ontlasting gaan, maar ook om grotere hoeveelheden. Zowel voor kinderen als ouders is dit een lastig probleem waar vaak ook veel schaamte bij komt kijken. Fecale incontinentie wordt geassocieerd met een lage zelfwaardering, depressie en angst. Recentelijk hebben gastro-enterologen besloten de termen ‘soiling’ en ‘encopresis’ niet meer te gebruiken.
