Abstract

The Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version (PCL:SV) is often utilized in both community and forensic psychiatric settings for formulation, treatment assessments and risk assessment. Accordingly, it is essential to assess the psychometric properties of the PCL:SV. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize research examining the PCL:SV to determine the most appropriate factor structure, independent of other PCL measures. Using a PRISMA protocol, 2893 articles were screened, with 19 included for analysis. Consistent with research on other PCL measures, the results supported the use of three- and four-factor models of PCL:SV psychopathy in community and psychiatric populations, with more tentative support for the original two-factor structure. Findings associated with the PCL:SV latent factor structure were less clear for the studies sampling forensic, nonpsychiatric populations. The choice of which PCL:SV factor structure to adopt for clinical purposes remains dependent on the clinician’s theoretical perspectives of the psychopathy construct.
Voetnoten
1
Skeem and Cooke (2010) clarify the distinction of antisocial behavior (i.e., that which defeats the interests of the social order) from criminal behavior by the intervention of criminal justice system in the latter.

2
Testlets are used in measurement models to reflect item dependencies (Steinberg & Thissen, 1996). Cooke and Michie (2001) propose that the item descriptions for those items falling on a testlet have overlap so are more accurately reflected in this manner.

3
Not reported in Table 4, Forth et al. (1996) reported that a single factor solution appeared to account for the most variance in both their male and female samples, yet Kaiser’s criterion and the respective factor loadings were inconsistent with a single-factor solution. Further, Rogers et al. (2000) reported that use of Scree plot test supported a three-factor model; however, this model, unlike their identified two-factor model, was not identified because of excessive cross loadings using the PCL:SV sub criteria. Clear factor solutions were not identified in the EFA models of Forth et al. (1996) and Rogers et al. (2000).

4
Covariation among items in CBFA is presumed to be explained by both general factors and separate uncorrelated grouping factors, which has been proposed to provide a more accurate reflection of the unique coherency among particular subgroups of items than in standard CFA (Reise et al., 2010).
