Samenvatting

Epidemiologie bestudeert de frequentie van ziekten in menselijke populaties. In dit eerste hoofdstuk wordt uitgelegd wat het vak epidemiologie inhoudt, op welke concepten het is gestoeld en hoe het kan worden toegepast. De centrale variabele in elk epidemiologisch onderzoek is een gezondheids- of ziekte-uitkomst. In de regel worden ziektefrequenties in groepen mensen met verschillende kenmerken vergeleken, hetgeen tot uitdrukking komt in de epidemiologische breuk. Epidemiologen trachten erachter te komen welke determinanten een ziekte beïnvloeden. Dit wordt weergegeven in een wiskundige formule, de epidemiologische functie. De stappen in epidemiologisch onderzoek volgen het schema van de empirische cyclus. Hoofdstuk 1 sluit af door een blik te werpen op het verleden, het heden en de toekomst van dit interessante vakgebied.
